Introduction to Political Philosophy
Sixth (penultimate) Paper Assignment: Locke
Font: times new roman and 12pt
Regarding topics 1 through 3: Five pages of analysis and interpretation, on one of the following chapters from Locke’s Second Treatise of Government. I have chosen chapters
that we either skipped altogether or passed over lightly in class. Your paper should explore the significance of the chapter, with due attention to its place in the overall plan
of the work as a whole. In particular, what are the most important things that the chapter in question adds to Locke’s argument presented up to that point?
1. Chapter XIV: Of Prerogative.
2. Chapter XVI: Of Conquest.
3. Chapter XIX: Of the Dissolution of Government.
4. If I am not mistaken, Locke’s most frequent biblical reference in the Second Treatise of Government is “appeal to heaven” and the relevant story of Jephtha in the book of Judges. Write four to six pages analyzing and interpreting the
meaning of this phrase and the significance of its biblical reference as used by Locke in various places in his Second Treatise of Government.
5. Compare the constitutional design of the government of the U.S.A. with basic elements of Locke’s teaching on legitimate civil government, noting both similarities and differences. (You may deal with “the constitutional design” either
as originally instituted or as it is today).
